The End of Summer

In the three months since my first public gig at Rugby town’s Love Rugby Fest, I have been very busy. Of course, there’s my day job: a summer of heatwaves in hospitality has kept me more than an arms length away from my creative work. But as the summer busy period comes to a close, my time has started to feel like my own once more.

I had quite the burst of creative energy in the last few weeks, and have written a new song called Weather. It encapsulates my current anxieties around climate change, and my ultimate (unattainable) desire to live in a cave with my partner and make art, safely away from the horrors of modern society. I promise it’s not as bleak as it sounds… I’m very proud of it, and am excited to develop it further during album production. A rough demo of this song can be found on my soundcloud, which you can access the link to via my music page.

I was invited to perform at a gig in Newport on the 24th of August: an intimate affair hosted at Arcadia Coffee House in Newport arcade. I performed an early version of Weather during the soundcheck, and noted a few misty eyes amongst the small audience of other performers. It was great to get the feedback on a song that hadn’t existed the week before, given how long it usually takes me to write and build the courage to show others what I’ve been working on.

This was my first gig since Art at The Alex in the first week of July, and it felt so good to be back on a makeshift stage, guitar in hand. The gig was organised by my friend, creative partner and front person of Thaime’s Place - Kailen. Please take the time to check out their band and music - what an absurdly talented human being, and a bloody lovely one at that!

I was joined at the gig by a group of my friends, my roommate, and partner; my gaggle made up half the room and I couldn’t have felt more supported. It was such a lovely evening, in a beautiful venue, surrounded by the best of people. Two of the other performers, Lara Rxse and Emmy Seren have quickly become my favourite new artists. I’ve blown through their Spotify offerings and can’t get enough. Release new music ladies before I go mad! You can find links to their music below.

I have a few more gigs in the pipeline, awaiting confirmation, and a handful of open mics that myself and Kailen are planning to attend. If performing is a muscle, it’s one I need to keep exercising.

I am aiming to do more of these gig roundup blog posts, and generally update as I go as we begin production on the album (hopefully this autumn!!) I am so appreciative of the support I’ve had from friends and family, as well as gig attendees and fellow performers. Regardless of how far this journey takes me, if anywhere at all, I’m beyond grateful to be doing it alongside the people who mean most in the world to me.

I hope that wherever you’re reading this from, you are doing as well as can be.

All the best,

H x
